The actors reading their character’s first appearance in the books

I just finished reading One Day by David Nicholls.
I had watched the movie a month ago and I enjoyed it. Somehow I decided to read the book; which is very unlike me because I find it hard to follow/read the books if I saw its screen adaptation. (It’s  not about knowing how things end, strangely I have always liked knowing what happens at the end of a book before I get down to reading it…)
I read the book expecting that it would be way better than the movie and I would end up telling myself “I should have read the book first!”-because we all know the cliché: “the book was better“…
This time I beg to differ; Casting was perfect (although I am almost sure that American Anne Hathaway’s accent bothered some people at some point- and I say this noting I’m not even a native speaker) I already love Jim Sturgess with all the stuff he did on Across the Universe, Legend of the Guardians etc. I think they represented their characters perfectly; the arrogant but cute idealist Em and handsome reckless Dex. I’d even say Hathaway was the better casting based on how Em is described in the book.
The Book and the movie are very similar in the sense that they follow the same pattern without much change; places, events and some of the conversations are the same. I might say sometimes the book was very steady and hard to follow so I can’t help but think sometimes movie is the better option.
What I love about the story (book and movie both succeeds in passing these messages) is that; it’s not only a friendship/romance story; but it’s also a very accurate description of how we go through the phases of future worries about family, career, love or simply mid-life crisis and soforth. There is so much we can find in the story about ourselves and our own silly worries; so it’s very close to the heart. It’s a travel to both the man’s and the girl’s mind.
(Spoilers here) I also liked the movie version of what happened to Em. In the book, it’s very sudden and without much emotion or too much drama and the chapter moves on quickly.(it’s not an icky love story in the first place) In the movie, however, it was very vivid and kind of predictable but still manages to wow you. (kind of like Joe Black but more tolerable because Anne Hathaway is not as gorgeous as Brad Pitt?) I think Dex’s grief was better put on-screen too. Ergo one more point goes to motion-picture.
Last but not least (of course) I admire how both works end with that “one day”, which is so important and is actually the key to both their stories; instead of ending it with Em and the bus. They could have chosen to finish the movie there (for the sake of drama and tears!) but they stuck with the book again. I think it gives us a more understandable account and also rinses itself from any possible clichés too.
So my point is; as opposed to major belief; this time the movie was better than the book; excluding certain parts (such as Emma’s idealistic personality- there, the author did the better job)
Most important part of this all is; I think this story touches all of us. I think almost everyone has this silly deal with someone to stick together forever and promise to marry each other “if both of us are single when we are (enter age here)” It’s actually nice to see it come true on page/on screen for once, even with a blue ending.
Becoming friends and then lovers isn’t some ground-breaking idea and I’m sure it’s been the subject of many many books and movies but One Day does it fair and well.
